During the week of April 26-29, 2022, the American School of Valencia celebrated World Book Week with a wide range of learning activities in all of the divisions of the school.
Under the initiative, “One Book, One School”, coordinated by Ms. Amanda Bird, our Curriculum Coordinator, the event celebrated the joy of reading as a whole school.
Students in Nursery-Grade 12 have been engaging with the story Violet the Pilot to see and understand what being principled looks and sounds like. “For the first time, we were engaging the entire school community in a literacy initiative, and it went really well! From the in-class activities, like solving math surface area problems or analyzing the visuals and how they reveal one’s character, to outdoor scavenger hunts, the week has been successful! There was lots of engagement among students participating in all grade levels as well students in Grade 11 volunteering in younger classes,” Ms. Bird remarks.
The ASV Library Team (Mr. Alex Caamaño, Ms. Miriam Blasco and Ms. Cristina Sevilla) along with Mr. Marc Boyer, ASV’s Community Activities Coordinator, also designed some engaging activities: bookmark and book cover design contests for our Elementary students, and a literary scavenger hunt for our Middle School and High School students.
“Grade 6 participated in a scavenger hunt consisting of questions on literature and books,” Mr. Caamaño describes. “We had ten teams, two parallel courses and six stations where students had to answer a series of questions ‘hidden’ under QR codes. All of the questions offered an opportunity to apply students’ knowledge to a new situation, as well as to deploy online searching strategies,” he adds.
Next week, the ASV Library Team will choose their favorite bookmarks and book cover designs in each class from Grade 1 through 5. A multimedia presentation containing photos of our students reading will be added to the ASV Library website and the main screen in the school atrium. Thank you to all those families who contributed to the ASV Book Week by sharing their child’s favorite reading spot!
