Seven International Schools Debate on Global Issues under the Topic “Stabilization through Progress”
American School of Valencia hosted the tenth edition of Valencia Model United Nations (VALMUN) the weekend of December 2, 3, and 4, 2022. This MUN conference hosted over 180 participants from seven different MUN delegations: American School of Bilbao, American School of Madrid, Cambridge House Community College, Caxton College, ES American School (Barcelona), the International School of Luxembourg, in addition to ASV, as the host school
The opening ceremony was held in the theater on Friday, December 2, 2022. It included welcome messages and the UN keynote speaker: Mr. Samuel Leal, Chief of the Technology Development, Design and Planning Section at the United Nations Global Service Center in Valencia. Mr. Leal, a former Brazilian Marine Corps officer, described to the delegates his extensive experience in peacekeeping operations and his view of international relations and the role of the UN in today’s world.
Debate Sessions
Delegates developed two intense debate sessions during the second day of the conference. They were preceded by lobbying and negotiation, as the goal of each committee is to approve resolutions on real issues with the highest possible support among the delegates. The discussions in the afternoon showed the remarkable growth of students, a fact that is used to give the conference’s awards. Students enjoyed the afternoon time for sports and the traditional pizza party.
Crisis Committees. What Nations Would Do If…?
VALMUN finished on Sunday with two crisis committees and the Closing Ceremony. A crisis committee is a debate on a breaking topic communicated by the conference team early in the morning. Delegates must analyze it, develop potential resolutions and gather the greatest support among the delegations.
The closing ceremony was held in the theater. It included awards for the best delegates and final speeches given by Ismael M. (Director of Communications and Logistics) and Héctor F. (and Marc V. (Deputy Secretary Generals).
