ASV Eco-School Initiative
As part of the ASV Eco-School Initiative, the American School of Valencia remains steadfast in its commitment to global consciousness and environmental responsibility. Since the 2021-2022 Academic Year, our school is integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into both our campus infrastructure and our academic curriculum.
A Landmark in Renewable Energy
A cornerstone of our commitment to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) is the ASV photovoltaic plant. Since its inauguration in October 2022, this installation has remarkably contributed to increasing the use of clean energy in our daily school operations, marking a significant milestone in our transition toward a more sustainable campus.
The plant features 218 solar panels spanning 2,000 square meters of the main building’s roof. Strategically designed to maximize the school’s specific energy demand—which peaks from 9:00 to 16:30—the system consistently generates approximately 40% of the school’s total electrical consumption. “We are committed to integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into the school’s philosophy, and this is demonstrated through many aspects, including our sustainable facilities,” says MS-HS Assistant Director, Mr. Josep Vicent Frechina.
An Educational Tool for Self-Consumption
Beyond its environmental impact, the solar plant has been serving as a “living laboratory” for our students. In the Atrium, a real-time monitoring screen displays the school’s energy performance, showing:
- Energy Consumed: The total power currently used by the campus.
- Solar Generation: The amount of clean energy being harvested.
- Grid Dependency: The remaining energy drawn from the external power grid.
According to Mr. Frechina, “the screen covers a number of educational goals: from a scientific point of view, it shows how an installation of this type works. At the same time, it makes us more aware of energy consumption and our progress toward self-consumption.”
The ASV Eco-School Project ensures that sustainability is not just a concept, but a daily practice. By balancing innovative infrastructure with the implementation of SDGs across the curriculum, ASV ensures that our students grow in a caring environment that values the health of our planet as much as academic excellence.
