The entire school gathered to celebrate a new edition of One Book, One School, a literacy initiative to build community, increase awareness about global issues, and celebrate the joy of reading. This year, the school-wide focus was the award-winning book We Are Water Protectors.
Throughout the week of February 23-27, Elementary School students engaged in learning activities related to the protection and sustainable use of water sources. Some classes learned about water and soil properties with Mr. Tyler Lane, while others explored sustainable landscape and garden design with Mr. Javier Coves. Grade 5 classes had lots of fun with their workshop on water reuse and the innovative concept of Sponge Cities, led by Ms. Carmen Hernández, researcher from IIAMA (Universitat Politècnica de València). Additionally, Grade 8 students took their learning off-campus to visit the water treatment plant located adjacent to ASV to see small-scale resource management in action.
Beyond the science of water, the initiative explored the book’s roots in Native American traditions. Ms. Ana Brigido led Grade 6 students in a thoughtful reflection on the languages and cultures represented in the story. This cultural journey reached a brilliant conclusion on Friday with a charming music and dance performance featuring a group of Elementary students—who brought the story to life on stage—and the Grade 6 classes performing Native American-inspired music.
“It was wonderful to see the ASV community coming together—families sharing expertise, students engaging in thoughtful discussions, and classrooms filled with excitement,” says the activity coordination team, who expressed a heartfelt thank you to all faculty and staff members who collaborated in making it possible.
