Ms. Abigail Ramirez Represents ASV at the NABE Conference 2023

Last week, Grade 4 Blue teacher, Ms. Abigail Ramirez, represented ASV at the NABE (National Association for Bilingual Education) Conference in Portland, Oregon. NABE is the only national professional organization devoted to representing bilingual/multilingual students and bilingual education professionals. Its goal is to advocate for educational equity and excellence for bilingual/multilingual students in a global society.

Ms. Ramirez was invited to present her Teacher Action Research project that she worked on during a professional learning opportunity in the 2021-2022 academic year with the AISiS Cohort – the American schools in Spain professional development She studied the effect of adding a metalinguistic goal to her guided reading lessons in order to boost comprehension in EAL (English as an Additional Language) students. The students worked on figurative language and were able to make strides in their analysis of fiction texts over the course of her 6-week study.

“The conference was an amazing opportunity to connect with other educators of multilingual students. I learned so much from the other presenters and I am looking forward to sharing what I learned with my colleagues here at ASV!” commented Ms. Ramirez. The keynote speaker was the US Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardoza, who gave the message “Bilingualism is our superpower!” Here at ASV, we couldn’t agree more.
