Once again, ASV celebrated the value of language and diversity within the school community by organizing special activities on the occasion of UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day (February 21). The following stories show the variety of projects led by students who are learning world languages at ASV in all the school divisions.
Languages in the ASV Community
Every year, in connection with the International Mother Language Day, the ASV World Languages Department leads a learning project featuring the linguistic diversity of the ASV community. This year, a group of students, teachers and staff members have created a Padlet an interactive map showing the variety of languages spoken at ASV Community.
Feel free to browse the map and click on the pins to listen to the varied recordings in which a number of community members share information about their mother tongues and which other languages they are able to speak.
Reads Around the World Project
Another testimonial of our diversity is the multimedia project Read Around the World in which ASV invites parents and family members to celebrate language, culture, and diversity through their favorite picture books in any language. Participants may record a read aloud which, after being edited, will be added to a playlist in the ASV youtube channel.

Activities and Projects in Middle School and High School
As this year it was not possible to hold large assemblies, Middle School and High School students were provided with the opportunity to participate in the presentations about the special world language projects developed on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day. These presentations took place during the Advisory period on Thursday, February 25, 2021.
Students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 taking French and German presented the collaborative projects completed through eTwinning, a part of the inter- European Erasmus+ Program. ASV classes have collaborated with 16 schools in Europe to create multimedia projects promoting language learning as a tool to understanding the world.
The Grade 8.2 French class also presented to their peers in Grade 6 the experience of the Pen Pal Project. By participating in this activity, they have learned more about French language and culture, but also about other countries like China, Greece, Ethiopia and Turkey.
Activities and Projects in Elementary School
Elementary School classes were also active in the celebration of the International Mother Language Day activities on Thursday, February 25, 2021. ASV students taking Spanish as Additional Language (SAL) had special lessons highlighting language diversity in our school. All SAL classes collaborated and created a large poster collecting messages in different languages and drawings.
Students also had a look at the interactive Padlet board where Ms. Arjona has put together their recent work on languages and cultures. One of the most curious elements are some recordings containing greetings in different languages spoken at the school community.
