Last week, students in Grades 8, 9 and 10 participated in an intercultural experience with 17 Hungarian students coming from Herman Otto School, a bilingual secondary school in Miskolc (northeastern Hungary). On Wednesday, May 8, its theater group visited ASV to undertake shared learning activities in the Spanish Language classes and perform a play based on the Spanish classic La venganza de don Mendo (Pedro Muñoz Seca).
“In Hungary there are seven public schools that offer a bilingual program both in Hungarian and Spanish. Herman Otto School has a very active theater group and they are completing a cultural trip through Spain,” Mr. Germán Bernardo, the Spanish teacher leading the expedition, describes. “In addition to Valencia, we have been to Barcelona, Tarragona and Benicarló, and we will continue through Cuenca, Madrid and Segovia.”
“It has been a very interesting experience that brings people closer through humor, literature and language,” Spanish Technical Director Ms. Lucía Gomez says. “The play was very funny and showed an innovative approach. Our students had the opportunity to see the great work of other students of their age, in a language not their own,” says as most outstanding facts.
And why do these students perform in Spanish? “More and more students in Hungary are learning Spanish since the Government implemented two world languages in the secondary school curriculum,” Germán Bernardo adds. “Visiting ASV has been enriching and our students will remember this day along with other experiences of the trip.”
