Iberian Soccer League

ASV Boys and Girls Varsity teams competed last week in the Iberian League Soccer Tournament, which our school was hosting for the first time ever. The tournament took place at the Marina D’Or holiday complex in Oropesa and featured  10 teams and 160 players from 5 international schools:

  • American School of Valencia
  • American School of Barcelona,
  • International and Bilingual School of Provence (IBSP)
  • Carlucci American International School of Lisbon (Portugal)
  • Benjamin Franklin International School (Barcelona).

This set made it by far the biggest international athletic tournament ever hosted as a school.

The ASV girls team came very close to making the final as they were very unlucky in losing to last years winners CAISL on penalties in the semi-final. Players were excellent as a unit and showed great spirit throughout. Once again they were led by an outstanding captain Teresa G. while Rosetta T. was possibly the strongest individual player in the tournament. She and Carmen B. were selected for the tournament All-star team.

The boys team faced an identical situation to the girls as they were paired with CAISL in the semi-final game. Unfortunately, the very influential Manuel P. had been injured in the second game of the tournament and although the boys fought well they went down by three goals.  Marc T. did a fine job as team captain while Ata T. Grade 11 and 8th grader Aron B. were selected for the Boys All-star team.

The Iberian League was a great success on many levels and the ASV students did an impressive job of working together in teams coming from across four school grades. As ever the tournament provided a great opportunity for the students to mix with other students from the International school community.
