A grade 10 student, Haley Sandoval, organized a poetry slam as part of a project for her grade 10 IT class in which students have time to develop a project in an area of special interest to them. She created a web page and has collected poems from all over the world and young people post about what poetry means to them.
On Thursday during advisory, any student who wished was invited to attend and read or just listen and support. Haley started the Poetry Slam by reading an evocative poem about her relationship with Europe as a resident of the continent for the past several years. Then students spontaneously got up and read poems about everything from love to hope to a conversation between football stars Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It was a great success and a testament to the power of young leadership and initiative!
