ASV will be celebrating books and literacy in a number of ways from Monday, April 20 to Friday, April 24, 2015 and here we advance some information on what will be happening in the school on those days.
ASV Read-a-Thon (Monday, April 20—Friday, April 24, 2015) [PreK through Grade 12]
Students will find sponsors to pledge a small amount of money (typically 1 cent) per minute that the student reads that week, both at home and at designated times during the school day. The number of minutes each student (and each collective class) reads is calculated each day, with the daily results posted on the bulletin board outside the library. The money collected from this week of reading will go to support Kapita School in Mfuwe, Zambia, and the event is an opportunity to promote both literacy and an excellent cause.
10@10 (Monday, April 20—Friday, April 24, 2015) [PreK through Grade 12]
As a way to promote reading at ASV, everyone in the school—students and teachers alike—will put down whatever they are doing at 10:00, and read whatever interests them for 10 minutes. This will take place every day from Monday, April 20 to Friday, April 24, with pages read during that time counting toward the Read-a-thon!
Flower and Book Fair (Thursday, April 23, 2015) [Flowers—Elementary through Grade 12]
April 23, 2015 is World Book Day, in part because this day commemorates the death of both Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. April 23 is also the Diada de Sant Jordi (Feast of Saint George) in Cataluña, a day for flowers, but also for books. From Tuesday, April 14 to Monday, April 20, 2015 Elementary and High School students will have the opportunity to buy a flower for someone else in the school, and to leave a note with that flower. All the flowers will be distributed on Thursday, April 23. On this day we will also sponsor a Book Fair (PreK through Grade 12) for those students interested in purchasing books in English. This is a great way for ASV to show its international mindedness, and to join in on the world’s celebration of books.
