As the final buzzer sounds on the 2024–2025 Varsity Basketball season, we celebrate a journey filled with growth, teamwork, and unforgettable moments on and off the court. This season has also seen the team achieve an unprecedented level of success in terms of results.
This year, the team competed in the Valencia International Schools tournament, the Iberia League, the European Sports Conference Division 1, and, for the second consecutive year, the World School Games.
Our season was filled with unforgettable moments and historic wins. It all started in Madrid at the Iberia League Tournament, where we made ASV history by not only winning the tournament for the first time, but also beating the American School of Barcelona in a final—something no ASV team had ever done before.

That win gave us the momentum we needed heading into the World School Games at the incredible Alqueria facility. After getting a taste of the tournament last year, we came back more confident and determined—and it paid off. We defeated last year’s champions, ACS Amman from Jordan, in the final, and Mauro S. was named MVP of the tournament.
Next up was the European Sports Conference Division 1 tournament in Geneva. We were considered one of the favorites, but with a few key players missing and injuries hitting hard, we had to rely on our Junior Varsity teammates to step up. Despite those challenges, we fought hard and proudly finished in fourth place.
We closed out the year with the Valencia International Schools tournament, where we aimed for our third trophy. It wasn’t easy, especially in our final games against Caxton College and Los Olivos, but we pulled through once again. That win made us the first ASV team to ever win three major tournaments in one season. What a ride!
The team’s success serves as reward and testament of the incredible work done by our legendary coach Mike Melin over more than ten years. Many of our senior players will forever be grateful for the drive and determination instilled in them by him. The intensity and never say die attitude of the team this year are the trademarks of a Coach Melin team. A huge thank you is warranted for Coach Melin’s dedication to developing both boys and girl’s basketball at ASV.
Coaches Jordi Beltran and Sandra Berrocal have stepped in this year to take over the reins and led with dedication, energy, and belief in the players. Their leadership has been a key element to the team’s development and success this year. The future is bright.
This year’s Varsity roster was made up mostly of seniors, and their presence will be deeply missed. These players brought leadership, experience, and heart to every game. They’ve helped shape the identity of the team and created a strong foundation for future players to build on. Many of these student-athletes have combined their basketball commitments both in and outside of school, with some even training and competing at a semi-professional level.

Teegan M., our captain will remember this season with a lot of emotion. “We’re a family—more than just a basketball team. A group of great guys who work hard, support each other, and give everything we’ve got to reach our goals. We’ve become the most successful basketball team in ASV history because we never backed down from a challenge. We’ve been the Davids taking on Goliaths, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished.
I want to thank Coach Mike Melin for everything he’s done to build this program and mold us into the team we are today. Also, a huge thanks to Coach Jordi Beltran, Coach Sandra Berrocal, our amazing parents, and the ASV+ staff for all their support. This season has been unforgettable, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”
As we reflect on the season, we’re not just proud of the results—we’re proud of the journey. With the legacy left by our seniors and the rising talent on the horizon, the future of ASV Varsity Boys Basketball is exciting.
