ASV Promotes a Deeper Understanding of AI and its Cross-disciplinary Implementation
The American School of Valencia hosted a professional workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Enhanced Literacies on Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026. The event gathered 18 participants from ASV and other schools (Benjamin Franklin International School, Carlucci American International School in Lisbon and Caxton College), as well as representatives of the School of Education of the University of Valencia, the Polytechnic University of Valencia, an educational consulting firm, and FECEVAL, the non-profit organization representing private and chartered schools in Valencia.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Mary Ehrenworth, who visited ASV for the second time this academic year, and Mr. Phil Seyfried who connected virtually from Columbia University in New York City.

The objective of this professional learning opportunity was “moving beyond sporadic AI experiments” to build a “coherent, scaffolded literacy experience for students that build student confidence and wisdom”, Director of Teaching Learning and Curriculum Ms. Amanda Bird described. “We wanted to engage educators in the different and ethical ways they can effectively use AI both in the classroom with students and on their own as educators,” she added.
Teachers initially learned the theories behind the approaches, and then put those approaches into practice first as students experiencing AI, and then as teachers planning and designing the AI to be used with students as a learning tool.

Feedback from participants highlighted professional collaboration and reflection on curriculum alignment: “It’s been a wonderful collaborative experience and I think we’re all walking away with lots of good things to think about for our next steps”, said one of the international educators.

Dr. Mary Ehrenworth and Mr. Phil Seyfried are the authors of AI-Enhanced Literacy (2025), AI and Reading Instruction (2026), and AI-Supported Teaching for Multilingual Learners (2026).

This initiative is part of our effort in developing a thoughtful, ethical, and progressive implementation of AI in the curriculum as part of the Responsible for AI in Learning (RAIL) Endorsement granted by the Middle States Association in 2025.
