A Week of Activities Related to PBIS

Dr. George Sugai, professor at the University of Connecticut, visited American School of Valencia to develop activities related to the implementation of the PBIS program. The schedule included workshops with the ASV PBIS team, a talk for the school faculty, meetings with parent delegates and the ASV Board of Governors, and a parent workshop open to anyone within the school community.

PBIS is an internationally-used preventative and responsive approach to positively support classroom, small groups and individual students to decrease disruptions, increase instructional time, and improve student social behavior and academic outcomes. “School, together with families, play an important role on acquiring social skills. Treats such as responsibility, respect, and emotional self-control can be taught”, Dr. Sugai explained.

A successful implementation of PBIS starts identifying the values connected to the school core mission. “They can be listed on posters and other visual elements in classrooms and common areas”, Mr. Sugai explained. Adults should appreciate positive behavior on students too because “children feel recognized and learn the importance of these traits.”

On Thursday, last day of Mr. Sugait at ASV, he was interviewed by the local newspaper Levante-EMV.
