A Grade 12 Student, finalist at an International Film Festival

IB students must complete a CAS portfolio demonstrating their ability to share their energy and talents with their community. CAS projects include specific actions and long-range projects aligned with the concepts Creativity, Action and Service. Fernando T., a student in his last year at ASV, took advantage of his passion for cinema and wrote a fiction screenplay. “I did some research on the format, wrote a short film to get familiar with, and I created a fictional story set in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, in the early seventies,” he describes. “I had an idea of the style I wanted -historical fiction- and I have placed fictional characters into a real context: a time in which a tentative independence movement appeared in the Canary Islands,” he explains about the style of the play.

So far, everything seems normal. What is already exceptional is that Fernando registered the work, “Santa Cruz”, and submitted it to the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival. A few weeks ago Fernando was told that the script passed the second stage and is one of the 10 finalists in the EMIFF 2020 Feature Film Screenplay category. “When I saw that I was a semifinalist I was already happy. Being a finalist, the truth is I didn’t expect this!”, he says.

EMIFF is an international film festival organized in Mallorca since 2012. Interested authors may submit films, documentaries, short films, and other works, while producers and directors have networking and location activities across the island.  The awards gala will take place on Thursday, October 29. Good luck, Fernando!
