American School of Valencia successfully completed the eight edition of VALMUN (Valencia Model United Nations), the school’s Model United Nations conference. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the format was modified in order that the International School of Luxembourg delegation was able to participate virtually. The ASV delegation was made up of 2 teachers -our MUN co-coordinators, Mr. Boyer and Ms. Kiraly- and 58 students, including the leadership team, the chairs, Middle School delegates and a enthusiastic team of four admins.
The opening ceremony and the debate day took place on the school campus on Saturday, November 28, 2020. The opening ceremony had a virtual keynote talk delivered by Mr. Lino Puertas, the Liaison and Protocol Assistant from the United Nations Information and Communications Technology Facility (UNICTF) in Valencia. Debates in the three committees were conducted on a videoconference platform to allow the virtual participation of the International School of Luxembourg.
VALMUN is an important component of the ASV Model United Nations Program. By participating in the conference, Middle School students have an opportunity to learn about world affairs by simulating the role of United Nation delegates. Most of the students acting as chairs in VALMUN 2020 prepare now their role at THIMUN 2021, a large Model United Nations conference organized in The Hague (The Netherlands) in January but moved this year to a virtual format.
