American School of Valencia is preparing the eighth Annual Valencia Model United Nations Conference (VALMUN) that will take place on November 28, 2020, at the school campus for ASV students and virtually for other delegations. VALMUN 2020’s main topic is “Ensuring world order amidst the COVID-19 crisis” and delegates will discuss a variety of issues in two committees following the same procedures used in the United Nations.
VALMUN is an important component of the ASV Model United Nations Program. By joining the conference, Middle School students have a chance to learn about world affairs through simulating the role of United Nation delegates. Students in grades 10, 11, and 12, with prior experience in MUN conferences, participate as chairs and leaders of the event. They are in charge of the agenda, the instruction of the Middle School delegates, and the successful preparation and running of the conference.
Being a part of VALMUN teaches students to debate issues concerning the world today, gain confidence in public speaking, and work in the field of diplomacy. Like many other MUN conferences, it emphasizes the importance of collaboration rather than competition, for one of its aims is to promote the idea of peaceful problem solving. Throughout the conference, delegates will make use of critical thinking and other skills, such as researching, listening, negotiating, conflict resolution, problem analysis, and technical writing.
