ASV is Participating in an International Math Modeling Competition

Four students in grades 10 and 11 are participating in the 2021 edition of the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge. Our students got this accomplishment by succeeding in the first stage of the competition, known as IMMC-Spain, presenting a mathematical model for a real and current issue: the planning of the vaccination process in a given country.

“The competition is basically applying Math to the real world and use it to solve an actual issue,” Marina O (Grade 11) says. “To do that, you take into consideration aspects about the real world and you try to translate that into Math,” Pablo C (Grade 10) adds. “This helps us to understand that Math has real applications,” Héctor F. (Grade 10) points out.

IMMC-Spain is addressed to students in grades 10 and 11 as Math modeling requires a high level in all of the Math studied in High School“We use a lot of functions, algebra, geometry, probability, ….” Marina describes when listing the specific contents. The fourth member of this team, Danila K., remarks the abundant amount of data they had to deal with during the first stage of the competition: “We are working with some kind of big data because we get a lot of inputs and somehow you have to organize all that information.”

From March 29 to 31, 2021 the four students were excused to follow the regular schedule and stayed three days working full time in the challenge. Their work is being supervised by the Math Team Leader, Mr. Mario Muñoz.
